A New Educational Initiative in Cambodia

• $10 per month = 1 scholarship for 1 student for 1 year
• $30 per month = Teacher education workshops for 2 teachers for one year
• $50 per month = Scholarships for 6 students for 1 year

Just over 30 years ago Cambodia was ripped apart by a war and genocide that left millions dead and destroyed the social and economic fabric of the entire country. Cambodia today is yet to recover, with one in three people living in extreme poverty. Education is critical in enabling Cambodians to lift themselves out of this cycle, but the devastating reality is that over 85% of young people don’t even start secondary school and even then the quality of school education is extremely poor.

That’s why we’re investing in an innovative new model of education that’s set to change the lives of 1350 school students in the Kampong Chang province, and revolutionise the education system of the rest of Cambodia. We’re opening three schools in some of the poorest areas of Cambodia. Through scholarships and outreach programs we’ll ensure that every child has the chance to go to school.

Dani (pictured) is 15. Until recently she’d never been to school because she needed to work so that her family survived. Her younger sister has a congenital heart defect and her parents have to regularly make the impossible choice between food, education and medicine. But through a scholarship Dani has been able to start school and begin to build a better future.

Innovative, high-impact campaigning

A key part of Oaktree's vision is to see Australia take the lead to realise the Millenium Development Goals. To do this, we mobilise Australians to influence our national decision makers.

In 2011, we are going to:

• Create eye catching and headline grabbing stunts, forcing our issues onto the agenda.
• Invest in new online tools and technology, allowing you to more effectively get your voice heard by decision makers.
• Reach millions through targeted media engagement, on the very pages of the papers decision makers read for their own news.
• Have a regular presence in the halls of parliament, ensuring they can't ignore us.

Training dedicated and effective agents for change

• $10 per month = will equip 1 new Schools4Schools student for a year
• $30 per month = will equip 5 Generators with an in-depth understanding of aid and development issues
• $50 per month = covers the costs of a Schools4Schools mentor

A dedicated agent of change is connected to the cause to eradicate poverty, committed to action and believes in the possibility of change.

An effective agent of change is influential (towards individuals, their community and decision makers), active and equipped (with skills and knowledge).

Through our core programs, Schools4Schools and Generate, Oaktree invests in the potential of young Australians by engaging students in interactive global education.

Volunteer Profile: Siobhan Toohey

Siobhan was selected as one of Oaktree’s first “Generators” in 2008. During the End Child Slavery campaign she led a group of six ambassadors and communicated with a number of community newspapers, businesses and Federal MP Lindsay Tanner. At the end of this 7-month program, there was no way Siobhan could leave.

So in 2009, Siobhan was recruited as Executive Assistant to Nick Allardice, the then Victorian State Director. In July, she travelled on the Our Generation’s Challenge study tour to Timor-Leste and Papua New Guinea. It was there that she realised the significance of Millennium Development Goal 8: developing partnerships and sharing resources with other youth organisations such as the Voice in Port Moresby.

Upon her return, Siobhan was ready for a new challenge and came full circle when she was appointed National Generate Director. In its second year nationally, Generate has been consolidated as a core Oaktree program across five states. Numbering 32 in its first year, and 130 in its second, Generate now engages with over 200 tertiary students each year.

Ultimately, Siobhan is at Oaktree because of the people. For every Oaktree achievement, great or small, there is a team of young volunteers who have spent countless hours committed to a greater vision: that our generation can see an end to global poverty.
